Papers of Roy Bell. 1912-1915.

The collection includes letters from Bell dated 1912-1914 to Tom Iredale in the Bird Dept. of the British Museum; Bell's Norfolk Island diary (358 handwritten pages) dated July 1912 - July 1913 and his Lord Howe Island diary dated July 1913 - August 1914. Includes collection notes from Eden, Gipplsand lakes, Mallacoota, Port Fairy and Tullaberga Island. Contains biographical information, meteorological reports, a description of whale killing at Eden, salvage operations from the ship 'Monumental City' off Tullaberga Island, Vic, and photographs. A description of the collection is located in folder 1.

Roy Bell (Raoul Sunday Bell) was a pioneer naturalist and collector in several parts of the South Pacific and Australia. He collected shells from Sunday Island (the place of his birth), and observed, investigated and recorded the bird life of Norfolk and Lord Howe Islands for G.M. Mathews. He forwarded specimens of shells, bird skins, birds preserved in spirit, eggs and insects to Tom Iredale at the British Museum.
